In the Dunes

In the Dunes
12x12 oil on canvas board

This morning a friend of mine, who I painted with in Jupiter last month, Jason Prigge, met up with me to paint along the northwest end of the island. I walked him all around the dunes, pointing out some of my favorite paths and patches of sea oats; shapes and passages of light/shadows that have become so familiar and beloved to me over the past couple years of painting here on Anna Maria Island. As artists, we naturally find ourselves drawn to certain subjects, themes, and genres throughout the course of our artistic journeys. At this point in mine, dunes are definitely my muse and it was fun to share it with a fellow painter!

Patience

Patience SOLD
12x12 oil on canvas board

Well, what with selling out house, remodeling several of out loft apartment rentals over my studio/gallery in Palmetto and preparing to renovate the beach condo that we'll be moving to full-time this summer, I've had to take a little step back from painting over the past few weeks. It's a bummer when life gets in the way of painting! But the other day I stole a couple hours to go paint on the beach! It may have been a cold, grey and windy day, but it still felt great to get out with my easel and get to work! And just as I finished up, the sun began to peek through the clouds with the promise of a nice beach day after all. Sometimes you just have to have a little patience...

Here is a larger studio version of it that I'm working on too- in-between rolling paint on walls! ;)

Seafood Anyone?

Oysters and Stone Crabs
16x40 each, acrylic on canvas

Taking a little departure from my landscapes in oils, I recently turned to some (oversized) still life painting in acrylics. These were done for the walls of the Seagrape Seafood Market, located next-door to my studio & gallery in Palmetto. Of course to really "know" my subject matter, it helped to sample it first (and again when I was done painting it!) If you're in the area and looking for some excellent fresh, local seafood, be sure and stop by!

The Ocean's Song

The Ocean's Song
30x30 oil on canvas

Another exploration in the subtleties of light on waves and sea foam, as well as the structure, rhythm, and movement of the ocean... gotta admit, I'm having fun with these!
