Fading Evening Light

Fading Evening Light
8x10 oil on canvas

Out in the backyard again, one of my favorite subjects to paint! This landscape is becoming so familiar to me and the more I paint it, the deeper my awareness and connection to it grows as I quickly and fluidly register the patterns of light and dark, warm and cool. Painting it during that "golden hour," just before the sun sets out of sight, helps me to focus and put down the what is essential with speed and purpose (and a bit of fun too!)

Moody Morning

Moody Morning SOLD
12x12 oil on canvas board

Even after all this time I still fall into the trap of "chasing the light" sometimes, as happened this morning. The sky started out dark and brooding, but towards the end of my painting session it quickly changed to a bright and sunny day... at which point I found myself painting some intriguing shadow patterns in the foreground sand- oops! Disconnect! So I went back over them to try and recapture the original look, but without much success. Oh well, live and learn!
