Receding TIde

Receding Tide
9x12 oil on panel

The Light Chasers Plein Air Group of Sarasota reconvened this morning after a summer hiatus. We met up at Caspersen Beach in Venice, most well known for it's plentiful sharks teeth. Though I like it best for its lovely warm hued rocks against the cool blue-green sea!

Pulled off to the side of the road for a quick little cow study on my drive down to the studio yesterday... cause that's the sort of thing I do!

Sunset Over Anna Maria Island

Sunset Over Anna Maria Island
20"x20" oil on canvas

Attempting to paint a sunset (and not have it look cliché) isn't an activity for the faint of heart. I've known this for some time and have thus avoided doing so. However, now that I've got this great studio space to play around in, along with some larger canvases and "a few" photographs on my computer that I've taken of some spectacular sunsets from our back porch, I kinda figured, oh well- here goes nuthin!

Morning, Noon & Night Paintings From This Past Weekend

Blinded by the Light
9x12 oil on Arches Oil Paper

Challenged myself this morning to capture the essence of the bright sun sparkling on the water, while trying not to go blind in the process!

Driftwood Study
8x10 oi on panel

While my kids enjoyed climbing and jumping off the giant driftwood logs along the north end of Longboat Key, I enjoyed studying them!

Last Light
8x10 oil on canvas

Had all of about 30 minutes to go after that soft, rosy, "post-sunset glow" of light on the scrub grasses & dunes this evening before it was too dark to see anything.

Peaceful Easy Feeling

Been having some fun using smaller plein air pieces to create larger works in the studio lately.

Field Day

Field Day
11x14 oil on linen panel

Painted over an old "stinker" for this one and gave it a second shot at life!
It's a lovely, scenic drive along hwy 41 from my house to my new studio in Palmetto, especially during sunrise... but man does that light ever change fast!

Banyan Beauty

Banyan Beauty
12x12 oil on canvas

Took another look at that beautiful banyan tree over off Park St. here on Anna Maria Island this morning. These trees are so incredibly sculptural!

Friday in the Field

Friday in the Field
8x10 oil on panel

My husband and I recently bought a 100 year old brick building in Historic Palmetto, FL where he now has his office and I (for the first time since college) have my very own art studio! So lately I've been doing quite a lot of painting there, however, by that I mean the kind that requires big buckets of paint and standing on ladders, as the place was in desperate need of a little TLC!
Now, I have realized over the years that I am in fact an "artaholic" and if I go for too long without getting my "fix" I start to feel all anxious and out of balance (I'm a plein air addict, what can I say?) So yesterday, on my 25 minute drive down to the studio, I pulled off to the side of the road and set up my easel in a field to do a quick study. It sure felt good to get my brushes wet again! I anticipate using my field studies for larger canvases in the future, now that I have the space to do so. But even with the bugs, oppressive heat, sand, fire ants, wind and pop up thunderstorms, (to name just a few of the perils involved in painting outside) it's still my favorite place to work!

Just before an incoming storm shooed me away
